Only Angels Have Wings (1939) - Presented by AMIPA
Tickets on sale Tuesday, March 31st at 10:30 am online and at the Bear Tooth box office!
Get warmed up for the 2020 Great Alaska Aviation Gathering at a special fundraiser presentation by the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA)--a screening of the recently restored Howard Hawks classic, Only Angels Have Wings (1939), featuring Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, and Rita Hayworth (in her first major role).
At a remote South American trading port, the manager of an air freight company is forced to risk his pilots' lives in order to win an important contract.
Nominated for two Academy awards, and inducted into the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2017, Only Angels Have Wings is a story of the pilots who flew the first cargo routes through the high altitude passes of South America—a story that parallels the life of “Glacier Pilot” Bob Reeve, later of Reeve Aleutian Airways fame, who pioneered a route flying mail from Peru to Chile in 1928.
Additionally, the screening will open with a short presentation of historic, Alaska aviation-themed motion picture clips from AMIPA’s collections. Some of these 8mm and 16mm films have been restored— all have been scanned at 2K. This will be the first time any of these high-resolution scans will have been presented, theatrically.
General Admission $40
All of AMIPA’s proceeds from this event will go toward establishing an endowment for the program, at the Alaska Community Foundation.
